Do the cooking smells reveal what day it is?

I was interested to read about the opening of the new Downies of Whitehills fresh fish counter at Mitchells and it brought back fond memories of a smoked fish dish my mother used to make using milk... I must ask he about that although, the chances of Marion replicating it are as remote as me catching a smoked salmon in my bath!

Whilst thinking about this I remembered that the fish dish was always served on the same day of the week; no, not for any religious reasons, it's just that every dish had its day and there didn't seem to be any room for deviation from this routine. So, Liver and Onions, Mince and Tatties, Casserole, Fish, Shepherd's Pie, Beef Olives (Mmm, one of my favourites) etc. etc. had a specific day spread around a two week rotation. I wonder if this was the norm back in the 60's and 70's?

I'm also reminded that the meal was served at 6pm every night, if you didn't get in until 6.30 it was there cold on the table waiting for you - but you ate it! Nowadays, our kids not only eat at different times, they eat different meals; our Rugby playing son likes pasta dishes, the other son like fast food because he's always "just heading out" and, our daughter eats according to what's left of her calorie count for the day.

I would be interested to know if anyone else thinks our eating habits have changed over the years and, do your kid's think of eating as a necessary evil rather than a time for the family to engage and enjoy each others company?

Please post your comments here or on the Facebook page, I would like to know if I'm alone - both at the table and, in relation to my family's eating habits!

What have you done to support your local community...

At Mitchells we are very proud of the fact that we are a local family business. We are also very passionate about our community and supporting our neighbouring businesses.

Most local businesses will agree that competition with larger stores can be tough, not to mention the strains of keeping ahead of other businesses from further afield.

By supporting us and buying from us you are making a difference to your local community. Here are some of the ways that you directly impact your local community when you buy locally:

1. You keep money in the local economy
Research shows that for every £100 spent in a local business, £68 is likely to stay in the community, compared to £43 when spent in a national business.

2. You embrace what makes Mitchells and Inverurie unique
You wouldn't want every business and town in Britain to look the same. Individuality is what makes our community special.

3. You help create local jobs
Local businesses are better at creating jobs for local people.

4. You help the environment
Buying from a local business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation, less packaging, and products that you know are safe and well made, because we stand behind them.

5. You nurture your community
We know you and you know us. Studies show that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains.

6. You help keep the high street healthy
Supporting local businesses means more colour and variety on the high street and creates more reason for local authorities to support them.

7. You create more choice
We pick the items we sell based on what we know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because we buy for our own individual market. We pride ourselves in the personal service that we offer our customers.

8. You benefit from our expertise
You are our friends and neighbours and we have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. We're passionate about what we do and will make an effort to meet your expectations.

9. You invest in entrepreneurship
Creativity and entrepreneurship are crucial to our economy. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community.

10. You make your local area a destination
The more interesting and unique we are as a community, the more we will attract new neighbours, visitors and guests.

Mitchells supporting the community
Our community is very important to us and we are working together with other local businesses to make Inverurie a vibrant destination for people who live here and also for visitors. Through the initiative 'Open your eyes to Inverurie', we hope to make Inverurie a great place to visit and shop. We believe that working together like this will make us a stronger community which we could not do on our own. Look out for more information about this initiative.

We would like to thank you for your support in our community and by shopping with us you have helped strengthen our community and our local economy. Please join us on Facebook where we regularly update our online community with news on events and promotions from Mitchells.

Have you started Christmas shopping? Our Hampers make perfect gifts from family, friends and colleagues. You can now buy a selection online please visit our online store: mitchellsdairy.myshopify.com. Alternatively you can make your Hamper more bespoke by calling us to order 01467 621 389.

Downies of Whitehills launch at Mitchells...

Mitchells are pleased to announce that Downies of Whitehills are opening a fresh fish counter within their Market Place Grocery this week.

Keith Whyte, Managing Partner of Mitchells said "We have successfully sold Downies packaged products from the chill in our shop and cooked their fish in our Tearoom for many years.  This new counter is a natural progression for Downies to offer customers a wider range of their fresh locally landed fish and award winning products. We are delighted that Downies have chosen The Dairy as their location within Inverurie and we very much look forward to working alongside Downies, another long established Aberdeenshire family business, in this way."

Launch Day
To celebrate this addition to The Dairy’s Grocery shop, an official opening of the fresh fish counter will take place on Saturday 29 October at 2.30pm with special offers and tastings throughout the day. Please come along and join in the fun.

Downies of Whitehills offer a huge and delicious range of fresh fish. They have won awards for their outstanding Cullen Skink Soup and Fish Pies, which you will be able to buy in store at Mitchdells. Also, keep your eye out for the 'catch of the day'.

Have your say
We would be interested to find out what your thoughts are about getting Fresh Fish delivered to your doorstep. We plan to introduce this service in our doorstep deliveries. So whether we already deliver to your door or you would just like fish delivered, let us know.

Mooriel's acting debut!

Mitchells beloved cow Mooriel is making her acting debut in the Flying Pigs production,Silence of the Bams at His Majesty’s Theatre Aberdeen from Wednesday October 12th until Saturday October 22nd. The theatre production will see our very own Mooriel making an appearance on stage.

It would appear that Mooriel is becoming a bit of a Diva. Flying Pig’s stage manager Keith Donaldson said "we’re taking good care of Moorial – she’s currently stabled in the basement of HMT, warm and dry, enjoying listening to Nigel Havers staring in Basket Case above her head". We are pleased to hear that she is enjoying herself and hope she 'breaks a leg'

The Flying Pigs theatre group's latest production has been described as having a 'darker tone than previous shows Desperate Fishwives and How to Look Good Glaikit'. You can catch Mooriel and all the cast of The Flying Pigs starting tonight. The show will continue on until the 22nd October.

For tickets to the show or for more information about the production please call 01224 641122.

We would love it for you to tell us if you go to the show and if you spot Mooriel on stage. Please let us know by commenting on our Facebook page.

Mitchells supporting the community

Our community is important to Mitchells so we would like to highlight a great initiative that has been introduced by The Royal Bank of Scotland to help local communities.

At the heart of the community there are great people doing great things to make where we live a better place. We are pleased that The Royal Bank of Scotland feel the same way as they are offering £6000 to a chosen charity or project through their Community Force initiative.

RBS Community Force is set out to work with communities to support projects and charities in the way of making a real difference. It is a platform that empowers local projects and charities to raise awareness of their work and make their plans a reality with the support of RBS and their local community.

Within our area of Inverurie and Aberdeenshire there are a number of projects and charities that are in the running to be awarded £6000 of funding. RBS will provide their time and expertise to the winning project and will encourage local people to volunteer their own time and talents to support the causes closest to their heart.

Please help one of our local projects win the funding by voting for who you would like to win. It is really simple to vote, simply click here to register and vote.

The projects in Inverurie are:
Home - Start Garioch
Grampian Employment Oppertunities
The Bothie Project
Pitcaple Environment Project Ltd.
Shazam Theatre Group

There are 31 projects in Aberdeen including Befriend A Child.
To view all the projects in Aberdeen simply search in the tab within this page by typing 'Aberdeen' then click 'list' which ca be found in the middle of your screen just above the map.

We really hope that you can make a difference by voting for your chosen project to win this amazing support. Voting closes on the 23rd of October so vote now!

World's largest Coffee Morning and Mitchells homemade Victoria Sponge...

Last Friday Mitchells took part in the World's Largest Coffee Morning that is held by MacMillan Cancer Support. The event stretches across the UK, with hundreds of people hosting coffee mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan.

We were delighted to take part and had a great time. We ran the Macmillan raffle/donations in the Dairy Tearoom last Friday to help raise awareness for MacMillan Cancer Support.

It is such a great charity that is close to so many people's hearts. We would like to give a BIG THANKS to all who came and took part in the raffle. David Grant was our lucky raffle winner. His prize from Mitchells was a homemade Victoria Sponge. Well Done David (pictured right), we hope you enjoy it.

Love British Food!

If you have been into Mitchells Dairy in the past couple of days you will have noticed that we are celebrating British Food Fortnight which takes place between the 17th September and 2nd October.

Given how proud we are to stock local and British products, we thought we would join in on the tenth national food promotion to celebrate the diverse and delicious range of food that Britain produce.

To mark the celebrations of the Food Fortnight, we will have decorations up in the shop and we are encouraging everyone to buy local, not only for this fortnight but as a matter of habit. There are countless reasons to buy local and to buy British, just some of the reasons can be found here. For more information on the British Food Fortnight check out their website where you can find our everything you need to know about buying British food including what logos to look for on products, where to buy and information about regional and seasonal varieties.

During British Food Fortnight 17th September to 2nd October Mitchells will celebrate all that is good about British, local and seasonal produce. Many of our suppliers produce local produce including:
The stew, mince, tatties and skirlie that can be found at the Dairy Tearoom is made from locally produced beef supplied by Preslys Butchers in Oldmedrum and it's locally grown potatoes and oatmeal from Hamlyn/Grampian Oat Products in Banff.

At the moment we have a great selection of seasonal and locally grown veg including carrots, cauliflower, Romanesque, turnips, cabbage, broccoli. Due to an extended growing season this year we still have locally grown strawberries from Barra Berries and Fetternear Fruit, which grow within 5 miles of our shop!
