How did you Shake Up Your Wake Up?

On Wednesday we had a double 'whammy' of things going on in The Dairy, for it was Burns Day and we have been helping everyone "Shake Up their Wake Up' in an attempt to promote the benefits of eating breakfast.

We had the pleasure of treating the Primary 6 & 7 pupils of St Andrews School Inverurie to their Farmhouse Breakfast. They enjoyed breakfast of cereal, scrambled egg on toast, fruit juice and home made strawberry & banana smoothies (made with Mitchells milk naturally!).

Here you can see them enjoying their breakfast (photo courtesy of J & A Photograhy). And in true Scottish tradition Mitchells staff were wearing a touch of tartan for Burns Day.

Are you one for skipping breakfast? What is your favourite way to start the day? Healthy smoothie or full Scottish Fry Up? We'd love to hear from you so why not join us on Facebook where we often hold competitions and keep you up to date with what's going on at Mitchells.

So, why is breakfast important?

We are fully supporting a campaign called "Shake Up Your Wake Up" which is running between the 22nd to the 28th of January 2012 as part of the Farmhouse Breakfast Week.

Did you know that the word "breakfast" was first used in the English language in 1463 and is often described as the most important meal of the day! And here's why:

  • It helps to hydrate you and increases your concentration levels throughout the day
  • It gives you a sustained source of energy for the day ahead.
  • Eating a breakfast such as porridge, which is rich in starchy carbohydrates, provides a slow release of energy
  • Drinking a glass of fresh juice will provide you with vitamin C and also helps to absorb the iron which is provided from cereal and bread.
  • Dairy products provide calcium for the development and strengthening of strong bones and teeth.
  • Breakfast is also the ideal opportunity for children to start the day with a balanced diet and helps to keep them fuller for a longer.

How do you take part?
Here at Mitchells, we provide lots of locally sourced produce to start off your day.

You could:
Buy some fresh ingredients from Mitchells, such as- cereal, oatmeal, smoked haddock (delicious poached in Mitchells milk with an egg), kippers (grill 'till crispy) from Downies fish counter at The Dairy and all the ingredients you need for a cooked breakfast.

We can deliver straight to your doorstep
Have your ingredients delivered throughout Aberdeenshire. In addition to milk and cream, we can deliver various products such as yoghurts, eggs and orange juice. We can also deliver the local Press & Journal Newspaper and we offer a free delivery service on a Thursday and Friday if your order is over £25. Just get in touch with us if you would like a doorstep delivery!

Or if you don't feel like making breakfast, why not pop down to The Tearoom for some yummy local produce to kick start your day? We're open from 8am Monday- Saturday (11am Sunday for Brunch) where you can enjoy porridge (great value at £1.20 per bowl), full cooked breakfasts, eggs any way you like, bacon/egg/sausage filled rolls, cereals and toast. We're getting hungry just thinking about it!

Gie her a Haggis!

To most of us haggis is seen as a beloved national dish. That, and being synonymous with Burns Supper ever since Rabbie Burns penned his immortal 'Address To A Haggis'.

It is that time of year again where we address our beloved national dish as a way of honouring and celebrating the life of Robert Burns, who is arguably the most famous Scottish person. On the 25th of January we hope you have a wonderful Burns Supper.

Everything you might need for your Burns Celebrations can be found here at Mitchells Dairy! We stock haggis from Scotts of Huntly, Presley & Co Butchers, Oldmeldrum and Macsweens of Edinburgh and we are proud to say that our neeps and tatties are locally grown.

If you are planning a feast for many at your Burns Celebrations and you are need of a bigger haggis you can phone in or place orders at the deli counter.

Mitchells Crannachan ice cream is the perfect Burns Night pudding and its made with locally grown raspberries, oats and of course Mitchells milk and cream!

The Dairy also has a fantastic range of shortbreads and whiskies in stock to complete your Traditional Scottish meal!

Top cooking Tip!
Tatties and neeps are best mashed with butter, seasoning and a generous splash of Mitchells cream.

What are you doing this Burns Night? What is your favourite way to enjoy Haggis? Do you have any Haggis recipe/cooking tips to share with us? We would love for you to share your stories with us on our Facebook page or why not send us a tweet to our Twitter page?

Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies:
But, if yo wish her grateful prayer,
Gie her a Haggis!
